Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

 

  • review state-of-the-art blood culture collection, analysis and interpretation including when to collect (and re-collect) blood cultures, how many cultures to collect, approaches to collection through intravascular catheters, duration of incubation (including recommendations for testing patients with suspected endocarditis), clinical applications of time-to-positivity, and interpretation of pathogens versus contaminants (for epidemiologists, laboratorians, and clinicians)
  • recognize technologies for rapid identification of bacteria in positive blood culture bottles 
  • review the cost-effectiveness of the newer technologies for rapid identification of bacteria in positive blood culture bottles
