Peter Gilligan, PhD, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, NC

Dr Gilligan is the Director of the Clinical Microbiology-Immunology Laboratories at the University of North Carolina Hospitals and Professor of Microbiology-Immunology and Pathology-Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. For the past 16 years, he has led the CPEP-approved post-doctoral training program in Medical and Public Health Microbiology. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and the Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. In 2001, he received from the Academy the Sonnenwirth-bioMerieux Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology. A former Division C chair, he currently serves on the editorial board of the 3 major clinical microbiology journals, is a past section editor of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology from 1994-2003. He is a co-author of the text, Cases in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, published by ASM Books which is currently in its third edition as well as publishing over 125 articles and book chapters. He has given over 200 invited lectures on a variety of topics.
