Carl Suetens, MD, is Senior Expert Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-associated infections at the Surveillance and Response Support Unit (SRS) at European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). He is Coordinator of ECDCís HAI-Net. The main priorities of HAI-Net are the coordination of the European point prevalence survey of HAI and antimicrobial use in acute care hospitals, the European surveillance of surgical site infections, the European surveillance of HAI in intensive care units and the repeated prevalence surveys of HAI and antimicrobial use in European long-term care facilities. Between 1997 and 2008, Dr Suetens was Head of the national surveillance of HAI (NSIH) at the Scientific Institute of Public Health in Brussels and member of the project management team of the EU funded projects on HAI surveillance in Europe: HELICS and later IPSE (Improving Patient Safety in Europe).
