Received B.A. from University of Pennsylvania in 1970, M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine in 1974, completed pediatric internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1977 and fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSWMC) Dallas in 1979. Has been full time faculty in the Department of Pediatrics of UTSWMC 1979 to present and was appointed Professor of Pediatrics in 1994. Is Board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Chaired the Infection Prevention and Control Committee at Children’s Medical Center Dallas 1980-2012. Served as a member of the Healthcare Infection Control Advisory Committee (HICPAC) 1996-2000 and then as co-chair 2000-2004 and represented HICPAC as the liaison to the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices (ACIP) 1997-2004. Currently Chair of the Texas State Advisory Panel for Healthcare Associated Infections and Preventable Adverse Events. Major interests have been in prevention of Group B streptococcal infections, MRSA epidemiology, delivery of immunizations,infections in immunocompromised hosts, and pediatric healthcare epidemiology, especially development of evidence-based guidelines.
