Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • identify key targets for improvement as highlighted in the Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Guideline of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee
  • describe key pieces in the new joint guideline of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) as they relate to rectal, small intestine and colon surgeries
  • discuss the current status of public reporting for surgical site infection, including validation
