Learning Objectives:

This session is to provide both a summary of the drivers for change, and the new definitions that will affect Surgical Site Reporting to CDC’s NHSN starting in 2014.  At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • describe the aspects of existing SSI definitions that are susceptible to subjective interpretation and result in variations in reported SSI rates in NHSN
  • outline an algorithm for approaching the detection and reporting of SSI in NHSN starting in 2014
  • describe additional variables for NHSN  SSI risk adjustment that will added in 2014 and 2015
  • describe the upcoming transition to CPT code-based SSI reporting by 2015
