Michael D. Howell, MD, MPH, Center for Quality, University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago, IL

Dr. Howell is the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Quality at the University of Chicago Medicine, an actively practicing intensive care physician, and a health services researcher. With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, CMS, NIH, and the CDC, his research has focused on quality measurement, quantitative and qualitative assessment of team function, and identification of novel risks for healthcare-acquired complications including infections. Dr. Howell’s research on healthcare-associated infections has appeared in JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, and a number of specialty journals. He has held a number of national leadership positions in critical care quality, including work on national guideline and consensus panels. He currently serves as the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s liaison member to the CDC’s Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and also serves on the CDC’s Ventilator-Associated Events Working Group.
