Gilla Kaplan, PhD, Global Health - TB, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle, WA

Gilla Kaplan, Director, Tuberculosis, leads the team that works to accelerate the decline in tuberculosis incidence worldwide. Gilla joined the foundation in 2013 as a member of our Global Health Program Scientific Advisory Committee. She is an authority on the host cellular immune response to mycobacterial infections. Prior to joining the foundation full time, she was a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Laboratory of Mycobacterial Immunity and Pathogenesis at the Public Health Research Institute Center at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Gilla is the recipient of multiple grants from the NIH-NIAID and other foundations for her research, and has published over 200 original articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as monographs, book chapters, and review articles. She has served on the Board of the Celgene Corporation since 1998, currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the Heiser Program for Research in Leprosy and Tuberculosis, and previously chaired the Board of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation. Gilla is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV. From Israel, Gilla holds an MSc and PhD in Cellular Immunology from the University of Tromsų in Norway.
