Room: The Pennsylvania Convention Center: 118-ABC
Derrick Crook, Professor, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom

Professor Derrick Crook qualified in medicine in 1977 at the University of Witwatersrand South Africa; he specialised in General Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia, Tufts, New England Medical Center, USA. He became a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Pathology and Physicians in 1998, a Professor of Microbiology in 2008 and obtained NIHR Senior Investigator status in 2009. He is a full time NHS Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, with a busy hands-on clinical workload, as well as being responsible for infection control for the two Oxford NHS Trusts accommodating over 2000 beds. In addition to this clinical portfolio, he has, during the past 5 years developed a research programme in translating whole genome sequencing of pathogens and linkage of patient data contained in hospital databases. By linking whole genomic typing of pathogens with this patient data, his research is leading to more rapid and effective diagnosis, management and tracking of common infections such as MRSA, C. difficile, TB and Norovirus. He leads the national UKCRC-funded consortium Modernising Medical Microbiology and co-leads the Oxford BRC Infection Theme that is establishing how these new technologies can be optimally integrated into microbiology. This large research consortium incorporates over 60 participating researchers. He recently obtained a Department of Health and Wellcome Trust Health Innovation Challenge Fund project titled “Implementation of microbial whole-genome sequencing for individual patient care, local outbreak recognition and national surveillance”.
