  • review state-of-the-art knowledge of technologies and applications of molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases
  • discuss ways in which molecular diagnostics are used to identify and characterize novel human and animal pathogens
  • identify advantages and limitations of whole genome sequencing in molecular epidemiologic analyses
  • assess the current and potential utility of molecular technologies to advance our understanding of infectious diseases in populations
  • summarize the promise of molecular diagnostics to improve clinical care of individuals patients and surveillance of infectious diseases
