Leonard A. Mermel, D.O., Sc.M., AM (Hon), FACP, FIDSA, FSHEA is Professor of Medicine, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Medical Director, Dept. of Epidemiology & Infection Control, Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Mermel was Technical Expert Panel Member of the Medicare Patient Safety Monitoring System. He was a past recipient of the SHEA Young Investigator Award, he was 2005 SHEA President and 2014 SHEA Mentor Scholar Award recipient. He is past recipient of the Ralph A. Kinsella, Sr. Memorial Tribute Award from St. Louis University Hospitals for outstanding qualities of work, leadership, and ability as a house staff officer, and the Brown Medical School Department of Medicine Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, Brown Medical School Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and Brown Medical School Certificate of Recognition for Exemplary Teaching and 2016 recipient of The Milton W. Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award from Rhode Island Hospital Medical Staff Association for a physician who has made exceptional contributions to medicine, medical education and research; who has demonstrated leadership; and who has been an exemplary role model. Dr. Mermel is a member of Delta Omega, the Honorary Public Health Society. On his 2016 birthday, Dr. Mermel received a Senate Citation from the Rhode Island Senate, Certificate of Special Recognition from the Rhode Island Governor, and a Resolution was passed by the Rhode Island House of Representatives observing that day as ‘Dr. Leonard Alan Mermel Day’ in Rhode Island. He has been repeatedly selected by his peers to be included as one of The Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, The Best of Rhode Island - Infectious Diseases Physician, Castle Connolly Top Doctor and he’s listed in the Guide to America’s Top Physicians, US News & World Report Top Doctor, Consumers’ Checkbook’s Top Doctor, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science & Engineering. Dr. Mermel has authored or co-authored over 300 articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts dealing with infection control and infectious diseases. He has lectured at the National Institutes of Health, Institute of Medicine, NASA Johnson Space Center, and internationally on infectious disease issues. His research interest is the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.
