Jeffrey R. Starke, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Starke graduated with a B.Sc. degree from Brown University in 1976, and received his M.D. from the University of Rochester in 1980. After completing a residency in pediatrics and fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases, he joined the Baylor faculty where he has remained. His major area of study has been tuberculosis in children. He is an author of over 150 papers and 40 chapters on childhood tuberculosis, and is the editor of the multi-authored international book Handbook of Child and Adolescent Tuberculosis. He has been a member of numerous guideline writing groups for the American Thoracic Society [ATS], Infectious Disease Society of America, American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP] and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], and has served as the liaison from the ATS to the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases [the “Red Book” committee] since 2000. He is a former member and past chairman of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis, and was reappointed to this group in 2015. He has been an advisor for the CDC, World Health Organization, and the national tuberculosis programs of several high burden countries. He has been active in medical education, having given many national and international presentations on tuberculosis and infection control. He has won many teaching awards at his home institution including the Robertson Award, the highest education award given by Baylor College of Medicine. He is the Past-Chair of the Baylor College of Medicine School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and is the former chair of the Fulbright & Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award Committee. Dr. Starke is married to Joan Shook, M.D., also a Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, well-known for her work in pediatric emergency medicine and patient safety. They have three children – Nathan, Matthew and Hannah - all of whom attended Baylor College of Medicine and are in various stages of medical training.
