Melanie Thompson, MD, AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta, Atlanta, GA

Dr. Thompson currently serves as Chair of the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA). She has been involved in HIV research as Principal Investigator of the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta (ARCA) since 1988, and has conducted over 300 clinical trials of therapies to treat and prevent HIV and its complications. She currently is a member of the DHHS Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel and the International Antiviral Society USA Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel, which she previously chaired. At the state level, she sits on the Georgia Department of Public Health's HIV Medical Advisory Committee and its Legal and Ethical Committee. She was Executive Editor of the Fulton County Task Force on HIV/AIDS' Strategy to End AIDS in Fulton County, GA and was recently appointed to the new Fulton County HIV Prevention, Treatment, and Policy Advisory Committee. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the Act Now: End AIDS Coalition. She is a former chair of the National Institutes of Health, Office of AIDS Research (OAR) Therapeutics Research Working Group, and was an inaugural member of the OAR AIDS Research Advisory Committee. Most importantly, she has been continuously involved in the care of persons living with HIV infection in Atlanta since 1982, and it is from them that she derives the passion and inspiration for her ongoing work in HIV research and policy.
